Why Is My AC Not Cooling? 8 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

Few things test your patience like an air conditioner that runs all day but never quite cools the room — especially during a Sharjah summer. The good news is that most “AC not cooling” problems come down to a handful of common causes, and some of them you can check yourself in a few minutes. Here are the eight we see most often, what they mean, and when it is time to call a technician.

1. A dirty or clogged air filter

This is the single most common cause of weak cooling, and the easiest to fix. When the filter is choked with dust, air can’t flow across the coil, so your room cools slowly and your energy bill climbs. Pull the filter out (it usually slides from the indoor unit), rinse it, let it dry fully, and pop it back. If your AC hasn’t been cleaned in months, this alone can bring the cold air back.

2. Low refrigerant gas

If your AC blows air that is only mildly cool no matter how low you set it, the refrigerant may be low — usually because of a slow leak. This isn’t a top-up you can do yourself; it needs a technician to find and seal the leak, then recharge the gas to the correct level. Running an AC low on gas for weeks can damage the compressor, so it’s worth booking an AC repair and gas refill sooner rather than later.

3. Dirty condenser coils on the outdoor unit

The outdoor unit dumps heat outside, but only if its coils are clean. In dusty areas — and near the coast, where salty air speeds up grime — the condenser clogs quickly and the whole system struggles. A proper split AC service includes cleaning these coils, which often restores cooling on its own.

4. A blocked condensate drain

If the drain line clogs, water backs up, and some units cut cooling as a safety response — or start dripping water indoors. This is very common in humid parts of Sharjah like Al Majaz and Al Taawun. Clearing the drain is a quick job for a technician.

5. Thermostat or remote settings

It sounds obvious, but check the mode and temperature first. A remote knocked onto “fan” instead of “cool,” or a thermostat set too high, is a surprisingly frequent culprit. If the display is blank, try fresh batteries before assuming the worst.

6. A tripped breaker or failed capacitor

If the outdoor unit isn’t running at all while the indoor fan blows, a tripped breaker or a failed start capacitor may be to blame. Reset the breaker once; if it trips again, stop and call a technician — repeated tripping points to an electrical fault that needs proper diagnosis.

7. A frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the indoor coil or copper pipes will stop cold air completely. It’s usually caused by a dirty filter or low gas restricting airflow. Switch the AC to fan-only for an hour to melt the ice, then address the underlying cause — otherwise it will freeze straight back up.

8. An ageing or undersized unit

Older ACs simply lose efficiency, and a unit that is too small for the room will never keep up on the hottest days. Regular servicing extends an AC’s life a great deal, but if yours is well past a decade and needs frequent repairs, replacement may be the more economical option. A technician can tell you honestly which way makes sense.

What you can safely check yourself

Before you call anyone, it’s worth a two-minute check: clean or rinse the filter, confirm the remote is on “cool” at a sensible temperature, make sure the outdoor unit is running and not blocked by anything, and reset the breaker once. If cooling doesn’t return after that, the cause is usually gas, coils, drainage or an electrical part — all jobs for a professional.
