Water dripping from your indoor AC unit — down the wall, onto the floor, or splashing onto the furniture below — is one of the most common complaints we get, especially in the more humid parts of Sharjah. The good news is that AC water leaks are almost always fixable, and often caused by something simple. Here’s why it happens and how to stop it.
Where the water comes from
Your AC doesn’t just cool the air, it pulls moisture out of it. That moisture condenses on the cold indoor coil, drips into a tray, and drains away through a pipe. When that process is interrupted, the water has nowhere to go but into your room. In humid coastal areas like Al Majaz, Al Khan and Al Taawun, the unit produces a lot of condensation, so a small blockage shows up as a leak quickly.
1. A blocked condensate drain (the usual suspect)
By far the most common cause. Over time the drain line clogs with dust, algae and grime, so water backs up in the tray and overflows indoors. Clearing the drain line is a routine job for a technician and usually solves the problem immediately.
2. A dirty air filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can make the coil freeze. When that ice melts, it produces more water than the tray can handle. Rinsing or replacing the filter is the easiest thing to check first — and worth doing every few weeks in heavy use.
3. Low refrigerant gas
Low gas also causes the coil to freeze and then drip as it thaws. If your AC is leaking and cooling weakly, low refrigerant is a likely cause — one that needs a technician to find the leak and recharge the system.
4. A cracked or misaligned drain pan
Older units can develop a cracked drain pan, or the pan can shift out of position so water misses the drain. This needs inspection and, sometimes, a replacement part.
5. Poor installation slope
The indoor unit needs a slight tilt toward the drain so gravity does its job. If it was installed level — or tilted the wrong way — water pools and leaks. This is common with hurried installations and is corrected by re-levelling the unit.
What you can check yourself
Switch the AC off if it’s actively dripping to avoid damage below. Then check and clean the filter, and make sure nothing is obviously blocking the outdoor drain outlet. If cleaning the filter doesn’t stop the leak within a day, the cause is likely the drain line, the gas or the drain pan — all technician jobs.
