It’s a confusing situation: your freezer is doing its job perfectly, ice cream rock-solid, but the fridge section below is barely cool and your milk is going off early. When the freezer works but the fridge doesn’t, it usually points to one of a few specific faults — and in the UAE heat, it’s worth sorting quickly before you lose a fridge full of food. Here’s what’s likely going on.
How a fridge actually cools
In most modern fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and then blown up into the fridge compartment through a vent, with a small fan and a flap (the damper) controlling how much gets through. That’s the key clue: if the freezer is cold, the cooling system itself is working — the problem is usually that cold air isn’t reaching the fridge section.
1. A frost-blocked vent
The most common cause is frost building up around the vent between the freezer and fridge, blocking the cold air. This often traces back to a defrost fault (see below) or a door left ajar letting in humid air. You may even see a wall of ice at the back of the freezer.
2. A failed evaporator fan
If the little fan that pushes cold air into the fridge has failed or is jammed with ice, the freezer stays cold but nothing circulates upward. Sometimes you’ll notice the fridge gets slightly cooler when the freezer is very full, or a buzzing/clicking noise from the back.
3. A stuck damper
The damper is the flap that regulates airflow into the fridge. If it sticks shut, the fridge won’t get its share of cold air even though everything else is fine.
4. A defrost system fault
Frost-free fridges run a heater periodically to melt any frost off the coils. If the defrost heater, timer or sensor fails, ice slowly builds up and chokes the airflow — again leaving the freezer cold but the fridge warm. This is a very common cause and needs a technician to diagnose the specific part.
Quick checks before you call
There are a few things worth trying first:
- Don’t overfill. Packing the fridge or blocking the internal vent stops air circulating. Leave space around the vents.
- Check the door seals. A loose or dirty gasket lets warm, humid air in, which encourages frost. Wipe the seals and make sure the door closes flush.
- Try a manual defrost. Empty the appliance, switch it off for a few hours (or overnight) with the doors open to melt any hidden ice, then switch it back on. If it cools normally afterwards, a defrost fault is the likely cause and will return.
Why you shouldn’t wait
A fridge that isn’t holding temperature spoils food fast in the Sharjah climate — and a small fault like a failing fan or defrost part only gets worse. Catching it early usually means a cheaper repair and a fridge that lasts years longer.
