You open the washing machine at the end of a cycle and find a drum full of grey water and soaking clothes. A washing machine that won’t drain is one of the most common laundry problems — and often one of the most fixable. Before you call anyone, here are the usual causes and a few safe checks you can do yourself.
First, a safety note
Always switch the machine off at the wall before checking anything, and have a shallow tray and towels ready — there’s water in there that has to go somewhere. If you’re not comfortable, skip straight to booking a technician.
1. A blocked drain pump filter
This is the number-one cause on front-load machines. Coins, buttons, hair clips and lint collect in the pump filter (usually behind a small flap at the bottom front of the machine) and stop the water draining. Place a towel down, unscrew the filter slowly to release the water, clear out any debris, and screw it back firmly. On many machines this simple clean fixes the problem instantly.
2. A kinked or blocked drain hose
The hose at the back can get kinked against the wall or clogged with lint and detergent sludge. Check that it isn’t crushed, and that the end isn’t pushed too far down the drain pipe. If it’s blocked, disconnecting and flushing it through often does the trick.
3. A clogged home drain
Sometimes the machine is fine and the household drain it empties into is blocked. If a nearby sink or floor drain is also slow, the blockage may be in your plumbing rather than the machine.
4. A failed drain pump
If the filter and hose are clear but the machine still won’t empty, the drain pump itself may have failed or jammed — you might hear it humming without water moving. This needs a technician to test and replace the pump.
5. A door lock or lid switch fault
Many machines won’t drain or spin if they think the door isn’t safely shut. A worn door lock or a faulty lid switch can stop the whole cycle. If your machine also refuses to start or the door won’t release, this is a likely culprit and a common repair.
6. An error code or control fault
Modern machines flash a code when drainage fails. It’s worth noting the exact code — it tells a technician a lot. Sometimes a control board or wiring fault is behind repeated drainage failures, which needs proper diagnosis.
A quick reset to try
Before anything else, try running a rinse-and-spin or drain-only cycle. If the machine has frozen mid-cycle, switching it off at the wall for a minute and restarting can clear a temporary glitch. If it drains normally afterwards, you may just have had a one-off.
When to call a technician
